Hongnong Catholic Church is a parish church of the Archdiocese of Gwangju at 484 Hongnong-ro, Hongnong-eup, Yeonggwang County, within the Gwangju Gwangsan 2 district. The archdiocese’s current parish page identifies St. Monica as its patron.
Catholic life in Hongnong developed first as a mission station of Yeonggwang Parish. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that Yeonggwang Parish secured a site for the Hongnong mission in 1966 and rebuilt its chapel in 1979. On August 31, 2004, the Archdiocese of Gwangju established Hongnong Parish by combining the Hongnong and Beopseong mission communities formerly under Yeonggwang Parish.
Hongnong Catholic Church is therefore a local parish under the patronage of St. Monica, shaped by the history of a mission community that grew into an independent parish in 2004.
