About this place

Hohye Mission Station is a Catholic mission community at 16 Saebyeok-gil, Sanpo-myeon, Naju, in the Archdiocese of Gwangju. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea dates the mission station to January 1953, while a separate mission-history record gives December 31, 1952. In view of this small discrepancy, it is safest to describe the community as having taken shape around 1953.

The mission-history account states that the Catholic community developed within a settlement of people affected by Hansen’s disease. In 1953, Catholics and catechumens began prayer and evangelization in a tent and soon built a wooden mission chapel. As the community grew, the building was expanded, and a new concrete-block church was erected in 1966.

Hohye is now known as a local faith community connected with Nampyeong Parish. Its distinctive historical character lies in the way Catholic faith developed together with the life of a Hansen’s disease settlement community.
