About this place
Heuksan Catholic Church is a parish church of the Archdiocese of Gwangju at 180-20 Heuksanilju-ro, Heuksan-myeon, Sinan County, within the Mokpo-Sinan district. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records Heuksan Parish as established on November 11, 1958 after separation from Sanjeong-dong Parish, with Our Lady of Lourdes as its patron.
According to the archdiocese, the present stone church was built in November 1958. Its architecture, including the use of locally available rounded beach stones and its distinctive bell tower, was recognized for historical and architectural value when the church was designated National Registered Cultural Heritage No. 759 in 2019. The parish also preserves a history of postwar literacy work, relief, education, and practical support for island residents.
Today Heuksan Catholic Church serves as the parish center linking several island mission communities, including Hongdo 1 and Hongdo 2, and embodies both the religious and social history of Catholic life in the Heuksan islands.
