About this place
Hampyeong Catholic Church is a parish church of the Archdiocese of Gwangju at 21 Namil-gil, Hampyeong-eup, Hampyeong County, within the Naju-Hampyeong district. The archdiocese records the parish as established on August 15, 1945, with the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary as its patronal dedication.
As one of the older parishes of the area, Hampyeong later served as the mother parish of communities that developed into Hakdari and Hampyeong Hasang parishes. An article published by the archdiocese records both communities as mission stations of Hampyeong Parish before their elevation.
Hampyeong Catholic Church is therefore a historic local parish centered on the Assumption of Mary and is also significant as a pastoral foundation from which other Catholic communities in the area grew.
