About this place

Gyeongdong Catholic Church is a parish church in Gyeongdong 2-ga, Mokpo, belonging to the Mokpo-Sinan district of the Archdiocese of Gwangju. The archdiocese records the parish as established on April 9, 1952, with St. Columban as its patron. Mokpo City records that it was separated from Sanjeong-dong Parish and that construction of the church, supported by the Missionary Society of St. Columban, began in 1952 and was completed in 1954.

The founding of the parish was connected with the expansion of Catholic mission in Mokpo and the nearby islands. The stone church, built while the Korean War was still under way, preserves the character of 1950s religious architecture. The Korea Heritage Service has registered "Gyeongdong Catholic Church, Mokpo" as a National Registered Cultural Heritage, with the registration dated December 9, 2019.

Gyeongdong remains a place where the parish community continues its life of faith around Mass and the sacraments, while the church building also serves as an architectural witness to modern Catholic history in Mokpo. Seeing both its living religious role and its status as cultural heritage helps explain the church's significance in the religious history of the region.

History & origins

Gyeong-dong Parish was established on April 9, 1952 after being separated from Sanjeong-dong Parish, at a time when the number of Catholics in Mokpo was increasing with the influx of Korean War refugees. With support from the Missionary Society of St. Columban, construction of the church began during the war in 1952; the building was completed in 1954 and blessed on May 5, 1955.

The parish also took part in the beginnings of the Legion of Mary in Korea. According to the current official history of the Catholic Mokpo Shrine, on May 31, 1953 the 'Refuge of Sinners' praesidium of Gyeong-dong Parish was founded together with two praesidia at Sanjeong-dong Parish, forming the first Legion of Mary communities in Korea.

Preserving the history of a wartime Catholic community and the missionary work of the Columbans, Gyeong-dong Catholic Church was designated a National Registered Cultural Heritage property in 2019, formally recognizing its architectural and local church-historical value.
