Gwayeok Mission Station was formed as a Catholic mission community in the Goheung area in the mid-1960s. The current Archdiocese of Gwangju record gives January 1, 1965 as its establishment date and confirms the continuity of the community in Gwayeok-myeon.
Gwayeok was initially under the pastoral jurisdiction of Beolgyo Parish. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that when the Goheung mission was elevated to an independent parish in 1971, Gwayeok Mission Station was transferred to the newly established Goheung Parish. It has since continued as a local community belonging to Goheung Parish.
Public sources do not provide a detailed later chronology of rebuilding or relocation. The history of the place is therefore best summarized through the two verifiable milestones: its establishment in the mid-1960s and its transfer to Goheung Parish in 1971.
