About this place

Gurye Catholic Church is a parish church of the Archdiocese of Gwangju in Gurye-eup, Gurye County, within the Suncheon area of the archdiocese. The archdiocese records September 11, 1970 as the establishment date and names Christ the King as the parish patron. It is the local center where Catholics in Gurye continue their life of faith through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life.

Its establishment as an independent parish in 1970 reflects the way the Catholic community of Gurye came to hold a defined place within the formal pastoral structure of the archdiocese. Since then, the parish has served as a link between the everyday religious life of local Catholics and the pastoral ministry of the wider Church.

The church is best understood not as a special pilgrimage shrine or religious house, but as the ordinary parish church serving Catholics in the Gurye area. Its identity under the patronage of Christ the King and the continuity of local parish life since 1970 are central to the meaning of the place.

History & origins

The Catholic community in Gurye developed in the period of relief and missionary activity that followed the Korean War. A regional historical account records that a mission station was established in Gurye in 1956, providing a stable basis for regular communal Catholic life.

The mission grew under the pastoral care of Gokseong Parish and became an independent parish in 1970. The current Archdiocese of Gwangju parish record confirms 1970 as the year in which Gurye Parish was established. It then became the local pastoral center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and Catholic community life in Gurye.

The present church building is reported to have been completed in 1992. The history of Gurye Catholic Church can therefore be understood as a progression from a mission community in the 1950s, to an independent parish in 1970, and finally to the establishment of the present church in the early 1990s.
