About this place
Goheung Catholic Church is a parish church of the Archdiocese of Gwangju in Goheung-eup, Goheung County, serving the archdiocese's south-central region. The archdiocese identifies Mary Help of Christians as the parish patron, and the church is the local center where Catholics gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life.
Catholic life in the Goheung area began with a small group of believers in the 1950s. According to historical Catholic sources, local Catholics asked for a priest's visits around 1955, and regular Mass began the following year as a mission community took shape. The community later grew under the pastoral care of Beolgyo Parish and became an independent parish around 1970.
The current archdiocesan record gives December 24, 1970 as the establishment date, while the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records January 1, 1971, so the precise date differs between sources. The broader history is clear, however: a small mission community formed in the 1950s and grew into a parish around the beginning of the 1970s. Today's Goheung Catholic Church carries forward that continuity of local Catholic life.
History & origins
Catholic community life in Goheung began with a small group of believers in the mid-1950s. According to the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia, local Catholics asked for priestly visits in 1955, and from 1956 a Sunday Mass was celebrated each month in Seomun-ri, allowing a mission community to take shape. In 1958 the mission came under the pastoral care of Beolgyo Parish and began receiving regular pastoral support.
During the 1960s the community secured land that included the present church site and in 1965 built a hall and accommodation for visiting clergy. The current Archdiocese of Gwangju record gives December 24, 1970 as the parish establishment date, while the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia describes elevation to parish status on January 1, 1971. Although the precise date differs, the sources agree that the mission became an independent parish around the turn of 1970–1971.
After the parish was established, a rectory was prepared in 1971, an education building followed in 1976, and the church was enlarged in 1981 together with construction of a convent and meeting space. Nokdong Parish was separated from Goheung in the same year, showing how the earlier community had grown into a parish that also contributed to the formation of new local parishes.
