History & origins

Catholic community life in Goheung began with a small group of believers in the mid-1950s. According to the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia, local Catholics asked for priestly visits in 1955, and from 1956 a Sunday Mass was celebrated each month in Seomun-ri, allowing a mission community to take shape. In 1958 the mission came under the pastoral care of Beolgyo Parish and began receiving regular pastoral support.

During the 1960s the community secured land that included the present church site and in 1965 built a hall and accommodation for visiting clergy. The current Archdiocese of Gwangju record gives December 24, 1970 as the parish establishment date, while the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia describes elevation to parish status on January 1, 1971. Although the precise date differs, the sources agree that the mission became an independent parish around the turn of 1970–1971.

After the parish was established, a rectory was prepared in 1971, an education building followed in 1976, and the church was enlarged in 1981 together with construction of a convent and meeting space. Nokdong Parish was separated from Goheung in the same year, showing how the earlier community had grown into a parish that also contributed to the formation of new local parishes.
