Geumsan Mission Station is a Catholic mission community on Geogeumdo Island in Geumsan-myeon, Goheung County, in the south-central area of the Archdiocese of Gwangju, and belongs to Nokdong Parish. The archdiocese's official record gives January 1, 1967 as its establishment date and confirms the same address as the package.

According to the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia's history of Nokdong Parish, Catholics in Geumsan once used a believer's shop as a place for mission-station worship. As the community developed, the present mission building was prepared and dedicated in 1989, giving island Catholics a stable place in which to gather.

Today Geumsan is not an independent parish but a local faith community under the pastoral care of Nokdong Parish, where Catholics on Geogeumdo continue communal prayer and religious life. The site illustrates the role of a mission station in maintaining both community and connection with the Church on an island separated from the parish center on the mainland.

History & origins

The Archdiocese of Gwangju records January 1, 1967 as the establishment date of Geumsan Mission Station. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia's history of Nokdong Parish states that for about five years before a new mission building was completed, Catholics in Geumsan celebrated mission-station liturgy in a shop operated by one of the faithful.

On April 15, 1989, a semi-basement, two-story mission building with 147 pyeong of floor area on a 1,084-pyeong site was dedicated for use as a chapel, convent, and catechetical space. This marked an important transition for the long-established Catholic community on Geogeumdo, giving it a stable place for worship and formation. Geumsan remains a mission station of Nokdong Parish.
