About this place
Geumil Mission Station is an island Catholic mission community in Geumil-eup, Wando County, belonging to the Archdiocese of Gwangju. Its continued existence is confirmed in the archdiocese's current list of mission stations, while the Catholic Church Directory in Korea records the same address as the package and gives February 5, 1986 as its establishment date.
Located on Geumildo Island, the mission station is a local Catholic community smaller than an independent parish, providing a place where island Catholics can gather for prayer and continue the life of the Church. Its setting clearly illustrates the importance of mission stations in sustaining community in places separated by sea from a parish center.
The current sources checked did not provide enough independently verified information to state its present mother-parish relationship, so that detail is not asserted here. Its identity as an Archdiocese of Gwangju mission station and a Catholic community in Geumil-eup dating from the 1980s is, however, supported by the official directory and archdiocesan list.
