Geumdang Mission Station is a Catholic mission community in the island area of Geumdang-myeon, Wando County, in the south-central area of the Archdiocese of Gwangju, and belongs to Nokdong Parish. The archdiocese's official record gives September 5, 1988 as its establishment date and confirms the same address as the package.
According to the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia's history of Nokdong Parish, the Geumdang community became an established mission in the late 1980s, later obtained its own mission building, and that building was dedicated in 1991. This provided a stable base for Catholics on the island to maintain communal faith life despite their distance from the parish center.
Geumdang is therefore not an independent parish but a local Catholic community under the pastoral care of Nokdong Parish, where believers in Geumdang-myeon gather for prayer and sustain their faith. Its island setting makes especially clear the role of a mission station in connecting a geographically separated community with its mother parish.
History & origins
The Archdiocese of Gwangju records September 5, 1988 as the establishment date of Geumdang Mission Station. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia's history of Nokdong Parish states that construction of a mission building began in Chauri, Geumdang-myeon, in October 1989 and that on October 28, 1991 a 70-pyeong building containing a chapel and convent was dedicated.
This chronology shows an island Catholic community first taking shape as a mission station and then, over several years, obtaining a stable place for worship and communal life. The Archdiocese of Gwangju continues to list Geumdang under Nokdong Parish, confirming the continuity of the mission community within the pastoral care of the same mother parish.
