History & origins
The Archdiocese of Gwangju records January 4, 1998 as the establishment date of Geumdang Parish in Suncheon. A Catholic account marking the fiftieth anniversary of the Missionaries of Guadalupe in Korea states that the missionaries took pastoral responsibility in 1998 for Geumdang Parish in the new-town area of Suncheon—described in that source as 'Geumdang (formerly Haeryong) Parish'—and built a new church in 2004.
The parish's early history can therefore be traced from its establishment amid the growth of Suncheon's new-town area in 1998, through a period of pastoral care by the Missionaries of Guadalupe, to the construction of a new church in 2004. The Archdiocese of Gwangju currently lists the community as Geumdang Parish in the Suncheon district.
