Geumdang Catholic Church is a parish church of the Archdiocese of Gwangju in Haeryong-myeon, Suncheon, within the Suncheon area of the archdiocese. The archdiocese records January 4, 1998 as the parish establishment date, names St. Ignatius Kim Je-jun as its patron, and confirms the identity of the present parish at the address in the package.
Established in the late 1990s, Geumdang Parish became a local center where a growing Catholic community in the Haeryong area could continue its life of faith as an independent pastoral unit through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community activities. Its patronage under St. Ignatius Kim Je-jun connects the identity of the parish with the witness of a Korean martyr saint.
This place shares its Korean name with "Geumdang Mission Station" in Wando County, but they are different Catholic communities. Geumdang Catholic Church in Suncheon is an independent parish, while Geumdang Mission Station in Wando belongs to Nokdong Parish, so the two sites should be clearly distinguished.
History & origins
The Archdiocese of Gwangju records January 4, 1998 as the establishment date of Geumdang Parish in Suncheon. A Catholic account marking the fiftieth anniversary of the Missionaries of Guadalupe in Korea states that the missionaries took pastoral responsibility in 1998 for Geumdang Parish in the new-town area of Suncheon—described in that source as 'Geumdang (formerly Haeryong) Parish'—and built a new church in 2004.
The parish's early history can therefore be traced from its establishment amid the growth of Suncheon's new-town area in 1998, through a period of pastoral care by the Missionaries of Guadalupe, to the construction of a new church in 2004. The Archdiocese of Gwangju currently lists the community as Geumdang Parish in the Suncheon district.
