The Nampyeong Monastery of the Claretian Missionaries is a men's religious community in Nampyeong-eup, Naju. Its formal Korean name means the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and the congregation is internationally known as the Claretian Missionaries (C.M.F.). The Catholic Church Directory in Korea and the Archdiocese of Gwangju both identify the address in the package as the congregation's Nampyeong Monastery.
The congregation was founded in Vic, Spain, in 1849 by St. Anthony Mary Claret together with five fellow priests. Claretian spirituality emphasizes a missionary life of listening to and proclaiming the Word of God, devotion to the Eucharist, and filial devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. According to the congregation's official Korean materials, the Nampyeong community was established in 1996 and has served in retreat ministry as well as in religious formation and the novitiate.
This place is therefore not an ordinary parish church, but a monastery where religious community life, prayer, formation, and missionary vocation come together. Retreat ministry is also carried out through the Claret Spirituality House on the same property, making the site a concrete expression of the Claretians' charism of missionary proclamation and interior renewal.
History & origins
The Korean Claretian community received approval for its establishment in November 1985, opened its headquarters in the Archdiocese of Seoul in 1988, and expanded its ministry to the Archdiocese of Gwangju in December 1994. The congregation's official Korean chronology records that the Nampyeong branch and the Nampyeong Spirituality House opened together in October 1996.
The Nampyeong community subsequently served as a retreat center as well as a house of formation and novitiate. The Claretians currently describe the site as offering individual, small-group, and group retreats while also supporting parishes and women's religious communities in the Archdiocese of Gwangju. The history of the Nampyeong Monastery can therefore be traced from the congregation's move into the archdiocese to its establishment at Nampyeong in 1996 and the continuing development of retreat and formation ministries there.
