About this place
The Claret Spirituality House is a retreat and prayer house located on the same property as the Nampyeong Monastery of the Claretian Missionaries in Nampyeong-eup, Naju. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea confirms its name, address, and operation by the Claretian Missionaries, while the congregation's official materials refer to it as the "Nampyeong Spirituality House."
According to the Claretians, the Nampyeong community was established in 1996 and has served as a retreat center as well as a house of formation and novitiate. The Spirituality House provides space for individual, small-group, and group retreats, helping guests remain in the prayerful atmosphere of the monastery and reflect on their lives. This retreat apostolate is connected with the Claretian missionary spirituality of listening to the Word and renewing one's life.
The site is therefore neither a parish church nor a separate religious institute, but a spiritual ministry facility operated by the Claretian Missionaries. While the "Nampyeong Monastery of the Claretian Missionaries" at the same address refers to the religious community itself, the Claret Spirituality House refers specifically to the space through which that community offers retreat and prayer ministry to the Church and visitors.
History & origins
The history of the Claret Spirituality House begins with the Claretian Missionaries' expansion into the Archdiocese of Gwangju and the establishment of their Nampyeong community. The congregation's official Korean chronology records its entry into the archdiocese in December 1994 and the simultaneous opening of the Nampyeong branch and Nampyeong Spirituality House in October 1996.
Since opening, the Nampyeong community has combined retreat ministry with formation and novitiate functions. Today the Spirituality House receives individuals, small groups, and larger groups for retreats, offers limited overnight retreats, and also promotes a one-night monastery stay for non-Catholics and people of other religions. This continuity shows how the house has developed since 1996 as the place through which the Nampyeong religious community extends its retreat apostolate to visitors.
