Geomundo Mission Station is a Catholic mission community of the Archdiocese of Gwangju on Geomundo in Samsan-myeon, Yeosu, and is under Seogyo-dong Parish. The archdiocese's official record gives its establishment date as October 31, 1996, identifies the same address as the package, and states that its pastoral area covers Geomundo in Yeosu.
In Korean Catholic usage, a gongso, or mission station, is a local community smaller than an independent parish, where Catholics gather for prayer and continue their life of faith under the pastoral care of a mother parish. Geomundo Mission Station reflects this structure in an island setting, serving as a point of continuity for Catholic community life at a distance from the parish center.
Visitors should therefore understand the site not as an independent parish church but as the prayer place and faith community of an island area belonging to Seogyo-dong Parish. That relationship to the mother parish is central to the present identity and role of Geomundo Mission Station.
History & origins
The Catholic community of Geomundo developed in connection with Seogyo-dong Parish before its formal mission station was established. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that the Geomundo community was incorporated into Seogyo-dong Parish in June 1995 and that the parish was planning a mission hall with future tourism ministry in mind.
The current Archdiocese of Gwangju record gives October 31, 1996 as the formal establishment date of Geomundo Mission Station. Since then, the island community has continued under Seogyo-dong Parish despite its considerable distance from mainland Yeosu.
Its history can therefore be traced from incorporation into Seogyo-dong Parish in 1995 to formal establishment as a mission station in 1996.
