About this place
Gangjin Catholic Church is the parish church of Gangjin in the southwestern region of the Archdiocese of Gwangju, located in Gangjin-eup, Gangjin County. The current Catholic Church Directory in Korea records the parish as established in 1961 and names St. Rose Anna as its patron. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia also records that Gangjin was separated from Haenam Parish in 1961, marking the formation of an independent parish community in the Gangjin area.
Catholic life in Gangjin began as a mission community before the parish was established, with catechesis and communal faith life developing as the community grew. With its establishment as a parish, the church became a local center where Catholics could remain connected with the diocese through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.
Gangjin Catholic Church today is best understood not simply as a building but within the history of a local parish community that has continued since the early 1960s. Its growth from Haenam Parish and its tradition of honoring St. Rose Anna as patron are important parts of the Catholic identity of the place.
History & origins
Organized Catholic life in Gangjin began in earnest in 1955, when Fr. John Kim Byeong-jun of Haenam Parish established a mission station in response to local Catholics. Because there was no mission chapel at first, the community held services in the homes of believers. In February 1957 a thatched house in Namseong-ri was purchased and used as a mission hall, providing a stable base for evangelization and catechesis.
As the community grew, Gangjin was separated from Haenam Parish and elevated to parish status on January 25, 1961. The present site was acquired in April, and a church and rectory were completed on July 20 of that year. With further growth, construction of a larger church began in September 1970; it was completed and dedicated in April 1971.
Gangjin Catholic Church therefore developed from household gatherings and a mission station into an independent parish, consolidating its pastoral base around the church completed in 1971.
