About this place
Dongsan-dong Catholic Church is a parish church of the Archdiocese of Gwangju in Gonghwa-dong, Yeosu, within the Yeosu district. Both the archdiocese and the Catholic Church Directory in Korea confirm the same address and the establishment date of June 29, 1936, and identify the Queen of Peace as the parish patron.
Because the parish has continued since the 1930s, Dongsan-dong is one of the long-established Catholic communities in the Yeosu area. Its significance lies in the way local Catholics have gathered around Mass and the sacraments over many decades while parish life developed together with the wider growth of the Church in Yeosu.
Today Dongsan-dong Catholic Church is both a place with historical depth and an active parish. Its current liturgical and pastoral life under the patronage of the Queen of Peace, together with the continuity of the community since 1936, gives the place its distinctive meaning.
