About this place
Dongnim-dong Catholic Church is a parish church of the Archdiocese of Gwangju in Dongnim-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju, within the Gwangju North 2 district. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea and the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia both record that the parish was separated from Unam-dong Parish and established on February 10, 1993, with St. Bartholomew the Apostle as its patron.
Historical Catholic sources explain that the parish was formed as the Catholic population increased with the development of apartment complexes in the Dongnim-dong and Unam-dong area. During 1993, the new community developed its church and related facilities, reflecting the formation of a new parish amid the urban growth of northern Gwangju in the 1990s.
The current Archdiocese of Gwangju webpage displays January 1, 1900 as the establishment date, but the current national Catholic directory and the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia both agree on February 10, 1993. This introduction therefore follows the cross-verified 1993 date. Today Dongnim-dong Catholic Church is a local parish under the patronage of St. Bartholomew the Apostle.
