About this place
Dunyul-dong Church is one of the oldest parishes in the Gunsan area of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju. Its patron is the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of the Immaculate Conception. It remains an active parish serving several neighborhoods of central Gunsan through Mass, the sacraments, and faith formation, while also retaining the character of a mother parish that preserves the history of the growth of Catholic life in the city.
The present church building is protected as National Registered Cultural Heritage. Its value lies not simply in its age: as the earliest Catholic parish building in Gunsan, it also preserves documentary records of its construction and therefore illustrates both modern Catholic architecture and local Church history. Dunyul-dong is thus at once a living parish community and a religious cultural heritage site of significance to the wider city.
History & origins
As Gunsan grew as a port, the Catholic population also increased. By the mid-1920s, Catholics were using a private home as a mission station and inviting priests from Nabawi Parish to administer the sacraments. As the community expanded, Gunsan Parish was separated from Nabawi and formally established in May 1929, creating the first independent parish community in the city.
The parish initially used temporary facilities and later a wooden church. Amid war and severe social conditions, it engaged not only in evangelization but also in care for orphans and the sick and in operating educational and welfare institutions. The present brick church was completed on August 17, 1955. The Korea Heritage Service notes the importance of the building as Gunsan’s earliest Catholic parish church and of the surviving “Record of Church Construction,” which documents the building process.
After another parish was created in central Gunsan in November 1961, the existing Gunsan Parish was renamed Dunyul-dong Parish after its administrative district. The present church was registered as National Registered Cultural Heritage in 2017, followed by documentation and conservation work. The overlap of parish history, postwar social service, and modern Catholic architecture is a defining feature of Dunyul-dong’s historical significance.
