About this place

Singwan-dong Catholic Church is the church of Gongju Singwan-dong Parish in the Gongju District of the Diocese of Daejeon. The current Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea lists it as an active parish whose patron is the Holy Family. Centered on Singwan-dong in Gongju, it serves as a pastoral center where local Catholics gather for Mass, the sacraments, formation, and parish community life.

The parish was created by dividing portions of the territories of Gongju Jung-dong and Gongju Gyo-dong Parishes as the city expanded and the Singwan-dong residential area developed. The present church therefore represents a Catholic community formed within that urban growth. The current directory also records the apostolic presence of the Olivetan Benedictine Sisters and mission stations under the parish, showing that the church connects not only parishioners in the immediate neighborhood but also Catholic life in surrounding areas of the Gongju District.

History & origins

Gongju Singwan-dong Parish was established on January 26, 1999, as part of an expansion of parish structures in the Diocese of Daejeon. The Catholic Times reported that the diocese created four new parishes at that time: Gyeryong, Gongju Singwan-dong, Mokcheon, and Bongsan-dong. Singwan-dong Parish was formed from portions of the territories of Gongju Jung-dong and Gongju Gyo-dong Parishes and was organized to serve Singwan-dong and other growing areas in the northwestern part of Gongju.

Its establishment illustrates how the older parish structure of central Gongju was adjusted to the expansion of newer residential districts. Gongju Jung-dong had long represented the city's established Catholic tradition, and Gongju Gyo-dong had already been separated from it. As the population and daily life of the Singwan-dong area grew, territory previously shared between those parishes was organized into a new parish so that a pastoral center could be closer to the faithful.

The current Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea records the same establishment date, January 26, 1999. It also lists the Holy Family as the parish patron and the Olivetan Benedictine Sisters as the religious community serving there, confirming the parish's continuing place as a formal pastoral unit of the Gongju District. The history of Singwan-dong Catholic Church can thus be understood as the adaptation of Gongju's older parish tradition to urban change through the formation of a new local Catholic community.
