About this place

Gilcheon Catholic Church is a parish church in Jangan-eup, Gijang-gun, Busan, belonging to the U-dong District of the Diocese of Busan, with St. Peter as its patron saint. Although it shares the Korean name "Gilcheon" with Gilcheon Mission Station in Ulju-gun, Ulsan, it is a separate parish in a different administrative area and with a different canonical status. It serves as a local center of faith where Catholics in the Jangan-eup area continue community life centered on Mass, the sacraments, Scripture, and prayer, within a living area near the eastern coast of Busan and the Jangan-sa valley.

A 2026 Diocese of Busan bulletin describes the Gilcheon community as praying for the surrounding area, assisting fellow parishioners, sharing kimchi with those in need, and taking part in a parish-wide Bible reading program. These practices show a parish under the patronage of St. Peter seeking to carry liturgy and the Word beyond the boundaries of the church community into practical sharing with its neighbors. Though modest in scale, Gilcheon Catholic Church has a clear communal character shaped by reading Scripture together and practicing care in everyday life.

History & origins

Gilcheon Parish in Jangan-eup, Gijang-gun, was established on February 18, 1998. This official establishment date in the Catholic Directory in Korea is also the clearest reference for distinguishing the parish from the mission station of the same Korean name in Ulsan. From that point, the Gilcheon Catholic community in Jangan-eup continued its own history as an independent parish.

Diocesan records show that Gilcheon Catholic Church observed a "Parish Day" on June 27, 2021. A file name attached to the article contains the expression "24th anniversary," but that anniversary count does not align with the official establishment date in the directory, so the number itself has not been treated as a settled historical fact. The event of the parish community celebrating Parish Day in 2021, however, is directly documented by the diocese.

Later diocesan material continues to identify Gilcheon as an independent parish. The official sources currently available do not provide enough detail to reconstruct a continuous chronology of its original separation, church construction or expansion, or jurisdictional changes. Even so, the establishment in 1998 and the recorded parish event in 2021 show the continuing history of a local parish community in Jangan-eup.
