About this place

Gijang Catholic Church is the church of a parish community in the U-dong District of the Diocese of Busan, with the Sacred Heart of Jesus as its patronal title. It is a local parish where Catholics centered on Gijang-eup share Mass, the sacraments, the Word, and prayer. The Catholic Directory in Korea records that the parish has one mission station. Gijang Catholic Church can therefore be understood as a center of local pastoral life that cares not only for those who gather at the parish church but also for Catholics connected with its mission station.

Gijang lies in a living area that links central Busan with the eastern coastal region, and the parish serves as a community base for the ordinary Catholic life of believers in this area. Its patronal identity under the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a spiritual sign that recalls Christ's love and invites the faithful to carry the faith received in the liturgy and sacraments into family and neighborhood life. Gijang Catholic Church is a place that embraces both the life of the parish community and its connection with the mission station under its care.

History & origins

Gijang Parish was established on September 26, 1975. This date, recorded in the Catholic Directory in Korea, is the parish's official starting point that can be verified today. Over the following generations the Catholic community of Gijang continued its parish life, and in the late 2010s it entered a major transition when the aging church building led to the decision to prepare a new church.

The new construction project took concrete shape in 2019. After the old church building was demolished, a groundbreaking ceremony was held on July 13, 2019, presided over by Bishop Joseph Son Sam-seok. Diocesan records state that the new church was planned with one basement level, three floors above ground, and a total floor area of 2,090.16 square meters. Moving from a long-used church building to a newly prepared space marked an important change in the physical setting of parish life.

Construction was completed and the new church was dedicated on November 1, 2020, in a ceremony presided over by Bishop Son Sam-seok. Through the dedication, the new building formally became the sacred place for the parish's liturgical and sacramental life. The verified sequence from the establishment of the parish in 1975 to the groundbreaking in 2019 and dedication in 2020 shows how the Gijang community renewed the place of worship that had supported its faith over many years in response to changing needs.
