About this place
Gangil-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Seoul Archdiocese's Gangdong District 9 at 476 Godeok-ro in Gangdong-gu. It was established on February 11, 2010, after separating from Godeok-dong Parish, and is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes.
The parish was created as the large residential communities of Gangil-dong developed and now serves local Catholics through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life. The present church was developed together with Gangil St. Mary's elderly-care facility, placing parish worship and care for older people in close proximity.
History & origins
Gangil-dong Parish was created on February 11, 2010, when the new residential complexes of Gangil-dong were growing, and it separated from Godeok-dong Parish. The first community began parish life by celebrating Mass in temporary facilities.
On April 6, 2014, groundbreaking was held for both Gangil Catholic Church and Gangil St. Mary's elderly-care facility. During construction, parishioners also celebrated Mass at Godeok-dong Church. The first Mass in the new church was celebrated on November 29, 2015, and the new church was formally dedicated on November 5, 2017. The move from temporary worship space to a combined parish-and-care complex defines the parish's early development.
