About this place
Gajeong-dong Catholic Church is a parish church of the Diocese of Incheon and serves as a pastoral center for the sacramental life and communal activities of Catholics in Gajeong-dong and nearby areas. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea identifies Saint Peter Yu Tae-chol as the parish’s patron, and the Diocese of Incheon lists Gajeong-dong as an independent parish in its current parish directory.
Within the urban communities of northwestern Incheon, the parish celebrates liturgies connected with the life of the faithful, including Baptism, the Eucharist, Marriage, and funerals, while also providing a place for formation, fellowship, and service. It is distinct from the nearby Gajeong 3-dong Parish and should be understood as a separate pastoral community despite the similarity of their names.
History & origins
Before the parish was established, the Gajeong-dong area belonged to Seoknam-dong Parish. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia explains that the district had once been a relatively quiet agricultural area, but as the urban area of Incheon expanded it became increasingly residential and its Catholic population grew. In response to these changes, the Diocese of Incheon separated the area from Seoknam-dong Parish and established Gajeong-dong Parish on November 1, 1986.
The parish territory was initially broader than it is today. In 1987, when Seogot Parish was created, part of the territory was transferred to the new parish and the pastoral boundaries of Gajeong-dong were adjusted. This change formed part of the wider reorganization of parish boundaries in northwestern Incheon as urban development and population growth continued.
Soon after becoming independent, the community began preparing a church of its own. Construction started on May 10, 1987, and on November 3, 1990, a church building with one basement level and three floors above ground was completed and blessed. The sequence shows how a newly independent parish gradually established a permanent setting for liturgy, formation, and community life.
