About this place
Dongtan Yeongcheon-dong Parish belongs to the Osan District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and has Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon as its patron. Its territory includes Yeongcheon-dong and Cheonggye-dong in Dongtan 2 New Town and part of Osan-dong, serving Catholics in this rapidly developed new-town area through the Mass, the sacraments, and faith formation.
Because its patron is Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon, Korea's first Catholic priest and a martyr, witness to the faith and proclamation of the Gospel are important spiritual signs for the parish. On the Solemnity of the Assumption in 2026, catechumens were baptized during a Mass presided over by the diocesan vicar general, showing that the parish continues to welcome new Catholics into the community.
History & origins
Dongtan Yeongcheon-dong Parish was established by the Diocese of Suwon on June 21, 2016. It began as the parish responsible for Yeongcheon-dong, Cheonggye-dong, and part of Osan-dong in Dongtan 2 New Town, with Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon as its patron, and has developed as the Catholic community of this new urban area.
Public official sources do not provide a sufficiently detailed chronology of its early temporary church or construction process, but the Catholic directory and the diocesan chronology agree on the date of foundation and its status as an independent parish. Its history is therefore most accurately understood as that of a parish newly established in response to the expansion of Dongtan 2 New Town.
On August 15, 2026, as the parish reached its tenth year, Vicar General Bishop John the Baptist Moon Hee-jong presided over the Mass for the Assumption, during which sixteen catechumens received Baptism. This recent record illustrates how the community, founded as a new parish, has continued to grow by receiving new members into the local Church.
