About this place

Dongmyeong-dong Parish of Our Lady of Fatima belongs to the Yeongbuk District of the Diocese of Chuncheon in Sokcho, with Our Lady of Fatima as its patron. The parish church stands on Yeongnang-ro 7-gil in Sokcho and serves as the center of a parish community where local Catholics gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and fellowship.

The parish has particular significance in the local history of the Church because it grew together with the Catholic community that formed in Sokcho around the time of the Korean War. It was originally established under the name Sokcho Parish and once served a wider territory; as new parishes were later separated and established in neighboring areas, it took its present identity as Dongmyeong-dong Parish. In this East Coast city marked by memories of war and displacement, the church has continued for decades as a center of Catholic life.

History & origins

The origins of Dongmyeong-dong Parish are closely connected with the rapid population changes in Sokcho during the Korean War. After military administration was introduced in 1951, many people who had come south in search of freedom gathered in Sokcho, including a significant number of Catholics. Father Hubert O, then acting head of the Diocese of Chuncheon, decided to establish a parish in Sokcho, secured the present church site, and appointed Father Patrick Won as the first pastor with responsibility for Sokcho and the Goseong area.

The parish was established on October 1, 1952, after being separated from Yangyang Parish. Construction of the church began soon afterward, and the present church building was completed and dedicated on August 15, 1953. Built while the war had not yet fully ended, the church became a center where a local community newly formed through displacement and migration could settle and continue its life of faith.

As the Catholic population grew, the territory under the parish was gradually divided. Ganseong Parish was separated from Sokcho Parish in 1958, and Gyodong Parish was established by another division on December 30, 1966. At the time of the Gyodong separation, the former “Sokcho Church” was renamed “Dongmyeong-dong Church.” This development reflects the broader growth of the Diocese of Chuncheon, as a single parish that had once served a broad stretch of the East Coast gave rise to several independent local parish communities.
