About this place
Dapdong St. Paul Cathedral is the cathedral church of the Diocese of Incheon and the parish church dedicated to Saint Paul. It grew from the Catholic community that took root in Incheon after the opening of Jemulpo and remains a symbolic center of diocesan liturgy and Catholic life. The official Catholic directory identifies it as Dapdong Cathedral Parish of the Diocese of Incheon, while the national heritage record recognizes the building as a historic Catholic church.
The cathedral is known for its red-brick exterior, three bell towers, arches, and domed forms. Its significance goes beyond age or architectural appearance: it reflects both the growth of modern Incheon and the establishment of the local Catholic community. Through successive conservation and repair projects, the present church has preserved the spatial character and symbolism inherited from its early history.
History & origins
The roots of Dapdong Parish go back to the early Catholic parish community established in Jemulpo in 1889. Official diocesan material explains that, as Jemulpo was developing into a gateway to Seoul and an international port, the need for a missionary base grew. Missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society organized the parish and began preparations for a permanent church, eventually securing the site on the hill at Dapdong.
Construction was interrupted for a time by the Sino-Japanese War, but the church was completed and dedicated in 1897. As the Catholic population increased, a major rebuilding and enlargement took place in the 1930s, and the basic form of the present cathedral was completed in 1937. Its red brickwork, three bell towers, arches, and domed elements reflect this phase of development.
The architectural significance of Dapdong Cathedral was formally recognized when it was designated a Historic Site in 1981. Since then, repeated conservation work has been carried out on the roof, bell towers, doors and windows, exterior walls, and surrounding grounds. The history of the parish and the preservation of its church building are therefore closely intertwined, making Dapdong a place where the early development of Catholicism in Incheon and the transformation of the modern city can be read together.
