About this place

Yuseong Catholic Church is the parish church of Yuseong Parish in the Daejeon Northern district of the Diocese of Daejeon. The Catholic Church directory in Korea lists St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus as its patron and records the participation of the Inbo Eucharistic Congregation in the parish apostolate. It is the center of parish pastoral life in the long-established Yuseong urban area, where local Catholics celebrate Mass and the sacraments and continue catechesis and community activities.

Yuseong Parish became an independent parish relatively early in what is now a dense network of parishes across northern Daejeon. As the area developed and the Catholic population grew, new parishes were later separated from Yuseong. Yuseong Catholic Church therefore serves not only as the liturgical home of its present parish community but also carries the historical significance of a mother parish within the expansion of Catholic pastoral structures in the Yuseong area.

History & origins

The Catholic community in Yuseong did not begin as an independent parish. It developed from Yuseong Mission Station under Mokdong Parish. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that this mission station was elevated to parish status on November 25, 1965. The Catholic Church directory in Korea gives the same date as the foundation of Yuseong Parish and identifies St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus as its patron.

After its elevation from mission station to parish, Yuseong grew into one of the pastoral centers of northern Daejeon. As urban development and the creation of the Daedeok research area expanded the local residential sphere, new parishes were established from territory formerly served by Yuseong. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records, for example, that Doryong-dong Parish was separated from Yuseong and established in 1986.

The Catholic Church directory also records that Jukdong Parish was established on August 18, 2017, with Yuseong as its mother parish. The history of Yuseong Parish is thus connected with a continuing pattern: growth from a mission station into an independent parish, followed by the creation of new parish communities in surrounding areas. Through these changes, Yuseong Catholic Church has remained a center of continuity for local Catholic life.
