About this place
Yugu Catholic Church is the parish church of Yugu Parish in the Gongju district of the Diocese of Daejeon and serves the liturgical and pastoral life of Catholics centered on Yugu-eup, Gongju. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records St. Joseph the Worker as the patron of the parish. Yugu continues to appear in the Diocese of Daejeon parish directory as a parish of the Gongju district, and it functions as the center of a local Catholic community connected with a number of older mission stations in the surrounding area.
Catholic history in the Yugu area reaches much further back than the establishment of the present parish, to the arrival of the faith and mountain mission communities in the early nineteenth century. The present church is significant as the parish center that inherited this older mission-station tradition. Yogol Mission Station, still identified as belonging to Yugu Parish, has a nineteenth-century foundation record, demonstrating that the roots of Catholic faith in the area predate the history of the present parish church itself.
History & origins
Catholicism had been present in the territory of today's Yugu Parish since the early nineteenth century, giving rise to mission stations such as Surichigol, Dumbume, Saranggol, Sagijeomgol, and Yogol. The Catholic Church directory in Korea records the foundation of Yogol Mission Station in 1883, providing a concrete indication that Catholic communities existed in the Yugu area long before an independent parish was established.
According to the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia, Gongju Parish purchased the site of the present Yugu Parish in 1954 in preparation for the growing number of Catholics, and Yugu Mission Station was established there in the spring of 1958. An effort was made in 1962 to raise the growing mission station to parish status, but it did not immediately succeed. After the Korean War, the arrival of textile factories accelerated local development, renewing the need for an independent parish.
With support from the diocese and the Holy See, local Catholics built a church and rectory, completing them on December 20, 1968. On December 28 of the same year, Yugu Mission Station was separated from Gongju Parish and elevated to Yugu Parish, and its first pastor was appointed. The new parish received responsibility for Yugu, Sinpung, and Sagok, bringing several long-established mission stations into its jurisdiction.
This development shows that Yugu Parish did not suddenly begin with the construction of a new church. It emerged from mission communities whose roots reached back into the nineteenth century and from changing local conditions in the mid-twentieth century. The present Yugu Catholic Church stands within that longer history in which an old network of mission stations matured into an independent parish.
