About this place

Yongjeon-dong Catholic Church is the church of Yongjeon-dong Parish in the Daejeon East District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon. The Korean Catholic directory records St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon as its patron, notes the presence of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres, and lists no mission station under the parish. It is the parish center where Catholics in Yongjeon-dong and surrounding parts of Dong-gu, Daejeon celebrate Mass and the sacraments and continue catechesis, faith formation, and community activities.

Its patronage by St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon, Korea's first priest and a martyr, connects the parish's identity with mission and witness to the faith. Yongjeon-dong Catholic Church is an independent urban parish serving the ordinary liturgical and pastoral life of Catholics in eastern Daejeon, and it belongs to the wider pattern through which diocesan parishes have been established in response to changes in the city and its neighborhoods.

History & origins

Yongjeon-dong Parish was established on March 20, 1984, when it was separated from Seongnam-dong Parish. According to the Encyclopedia of Korean Catholicism, its first pastor, Father Thomas Shin Sang-uk, rented a basement space of about 50 pyeong in Yongjeon-dong in April of that year and celebrated the parish's first Mass there. The new parish thus began its liturgical life in temporary quarters while preparing for a church of its own.

Construction of the church began in November 1984. On August 6, 1988, a church with one basement level and two floors above ground was completed and dedicated in a ceremony presided over by Bishop Joseph Kyeong Gap-ryong. A community that had started in rented space had secured a permanent church and pastoral base about four years after its establishment.

In 1991 the “Catholic New Life Community” was founded and organized direct sales of low-pesticide and pesticide-free agricultural products. The project was transferred to Wolpyeong-dong Parish in 1995, and the warehouse it had used was later converted into an Eucharistic adoration chapel. Also in 1995, Beop-dong Parish was separated, with part of Yongjeon-dong's membership transferred to the new parish.

In 2000 Songchon-dong Parish was established from areas of Yongjeon-dong and Beop-dong, bringing another adjustment of pastoral boundaries. The history of Yongjeon-dong shows how a community founded amid the urban growth of eastern Daejeon in the 1980s secured its own church and later gave rise to further parishes as the local Church became more finely organized.
