About this place
Yogol Mission Station belongs to the Gongju District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon and is under the care of Yugu Parish. The current Korean Catholic directory continues to list Yogol as a mission station; by its nature it is therefore not an independent parish, but a local Catholic community and place linked to its mother parish. It preserves traces of a long-standing Catholic presence in the rural area of Yugu-eup, Gongju.
Yogol is especially significant as an old mission station connected with the early missionary period of the Korean Church. Older material, however, also describes changes in the station's practical role as transportation improved, so its present schedule of Masses or precise mode of operation should not be inferred from historical sources alone. The safest way to understand the site is to hold together its current verified identity as a Yugu Parish mission station and its memory as an old Catholic village community.
History & origins
The beginnings of Yogol Mission Station reach back to the late nineteenth century, when Catholic missionaries were again able to work more actively in Korea. The Korean Catholic directory records 1883 as the year of establishment, and a historical account on GoodNews likewise explains that Yogol was constituted as a mission station during the period when the French missionary Father Camille-Eugène Doucet was ministering in Chungcheong. That account places the arrival of Catholic faith in Yogol no later than the period before 1884.
According to the historical material summarized by GoodNews, Yogol had 42 Catholics in 1884. The number exceeded one hundred by 1890, reached 145 in 1901, and 158 in 1915. These figures show that, in the rural Chungcheong region after the persecutions, the mission station developed into more than a temporary gathering place and became a local community in which Catholics sustained their faith together.
The location of the mission station also changed over time. The account states that around 1913 it was moved toward Yogol and later transferred to its present site. In 2003 a commemorative stone marking the 120th anniversary of the mission station's establishment was erected, giving visible form to the memory of a community that had continued since the late nineteenth century.
The current official directory again lists Yogol as a mission station under Yugu Parish. Although details of past pastoral operation should not be assumed to describe present liturgical practice, the record of its 1883 establishment, the growth of the early Catholic community, the relocation of the station, and the commemorative marker all support Yogol's place within the long history of early Catholic communities in Chungcheong.
