About this place
Yeonmu Catholic Church is the church of Yeonmu Parish in the Nonsan District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon. It serves as a center for the liturgy, sacraments, and communal life of Catholics in and around Yeonmu-eup, Nonsan. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea records Saint John Bosco as the parish patron, and the parish continues to serve the local community within the diocesan parish structure.
The name “Yeonmu” reflects a history in which the local Catholic community grew from mission stations into a parish and changed its parish name along with changes in local place names. Today, Yeonmu Catholic Church carries forward that local tradition of faith and functions as a focal point for Catholic life in the Yeonmu area within a pastoral territory connected with nearby mission stations.
History & origins
Catholic communities in the Yeonmu area were formed long before the parish itself was established. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that by 1898 there was a mission station at Daetdeul, now Jukpyeong-ri in Yeonmu-eup, under Hwasan Parish, and that another mission community began in 1900 at Dokgakgol, now Dongsan-ri. When Nonsan Parish was separated from Hwasan Parish in 1921, these local mission stations came under Nonsan Parish.
The immediate groundwork for a parish was laid in the 1950s. With financial support from Father Singer of Nonsan Parish, the present church site was purchased in 1956. A rectory was completed in June 1958, and the community was elevated to a parish later that year. The current Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea records the establishment date as June 20, 1958. The parish was first called Masan-ri Parish, was renamed Yeonmudae Parish in 1963, and has been called Yeonmu Parish since 1973.
At first the rectory was also used as a temporary church, but growth in the number of parishioners led to construction of a new church. Work began in 1959, and the dedication was held in May of the following year. The parish subsequently continued to care for Catholics in Yeonmu-eup and nearby mission stations. Its successive name changes show how one community maintained the same roots while local administrative and place names changed around it.
