Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

About this place

The Franciscan Sisters of Militia Immaculate is a Catholic institute of women religious whose life is rooted in Franciscan spirituality and consecration to the Immaculate Virgin Mary. The Catholic Church directory in Korea lists the community in Sangwol-myeon, Nonsan, within the Diocese of Daejeon under the subsidiary name “Seongmo-ui Maeul Convent” and gives its English name as Franciscan Sisters of Militia Immaculate. The congregation began in Japan in the mid-twentieth century and established a community in Korea in the early 1990s, eventually making its home in Nonsan.

The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia explains that the congregation's spirituality is linked to the Militia Immaculatae founded by St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe: its members consecrate themselves to the Virgin Mary and seek to live the poverty, humility, love, and self-sacrifice of St. Francis. The Nonsan community continues prayer and common religious life within this spirituality and also has a history of social-welfare apostolate connected with “Seongmo-ui Maeul.” The site is therefore best understood not as an ordinary parish church but as a convent where a religious community lives its consecrated life and apostolic mission.
