Wolsan Mission

History & origins

The early history of Wolsan Mission Station is closely connected with the faith journey of Bartolomeo Yang Jae-geun, a Confucian scholar from the Seocheon area. According to research by Seo Jong-tae, Yang entered the Catholic Church around 1900 or about 1901, leaving Confucianism in response to the final wish of his mother, Barbara Kim, who had secretly practiced Catholicism throughout her life. Known locally for his medical skills, he later used his influence and resources to support the Catholic community.

The academic study states that Wolsan Mission Station was founded in 1925 and that Yang was appointed its first lay leader. He evangelized people in neighboring villages, paid funeral expenses for poor Catholics who had suffered a bereavement, and helped those struggling financially find ways to sustain their livelihood. The growth of the mission station was therefore built not only on evangelization but also on practical love of neighbor and mutual assistance.

As a result, Wolsan Mission Station grew to the point that a Catholic magazine presented it as an exemplary mission station in 1934. By 1949 it was recorded as the third-largest Catholic mission community in the Seocheon area. This development shows how a small rural mission station could become a significant local community through lay leadership, evangelization, and care for fellow Catholics.

The history of Wolsan is thus understood more clearly through the actions of people and community than through a chronology of buildings. The experience created by Yang Jae-geun and local Catholics through evangelization, funeral assistance, and support for daily livelihood explains the mission station's distinctive place in the Catholic history of Seocheon.
