About this place
Unwol-ri Mission Station belongs to the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon and is under the care of Hongseong Parish. The Korean Catholic directory registers it at the same address in Hongdong-myeon, Hongseong-gun that appears in the package. It is not an independent parish but a local Catholic place connected with Hongseong Parish, preserving traces of a long-standing network of faith among Catholics in the Hongdong-myeon area.
The significance of a mission station lies less in its size than in the way it connects a mother parish with a local community. Unwol-ri developed within the pastoral sphere of Hongseong Parish, and the available official information does not require any assumption about a current regular Mass schedule or continuous staffing. It is best understood as a mission station of Hongseong Parish and as a historical space left by Catholic communal life in a rural area.
History & origins
The history of Unwol-ri Mission Station can be traced within the development of its mother parish, Hongseong. The Encyclopedia of Korean Catholicism records that Hongseong Parish was established in 1950 after separation from Yesan Parish, that pastoral activity was interrupted by the Korean War and the community reverted to mission-station status, and that the parish was restored in 1956. Hongseong Parish subsequently strengthened its network of rural mission stations across the region.
The first clearly verifiable event directly connected with Unwol-ri appears in 1978. According to the encyclopedia, during the tenure of Hongseong's ninth pastor, Father Joachim Lee Jong-rin, a mission-station hall was built at Unwol-ri in 1978. In the following years the parish also built halls at Jukrim-ri and Gujeong-ri, expanding the physical foundations of its mission-station communities.
The construction of a mission-station hall meant that local Catholics had a physical place in which to gather for prayer, preparation for liturgy, catechesis, and community activities. Unwol-ri continued to be recorded as one of Hongseong Parish's mission stations, and the current Korean Catholic directory still identifies the same place as a mission station under Hongseong.
The verifiable history of Unwol-ri therefore runs from the expansion of Hongseong Parish's rural mission-station network in the 1970s to its present relationship with the mother parish. The exact year of the community's original establishment and its earlier origins are not sufficiently documented in reliable sources and have not been asserted, but the construction of the hall in 1978 shows that by then Unwol-ri had a distinct local gathering place for Catholic communal life.
