About this place

Unsan Catholic Church is the church of Unsan Parish in the Seosan District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon. The Korean Catholic directory records St. Andrew as its patron, notes the presence of the Sisters of Notre Dame, and lists no separate mission station currently under the parish. It is the parish center where Catholics in Unsan-myeon, Seosan celebrate Mass and the sacraments and continue faith formation and community life.

Unsan-myeon is connected with the older Catholic history of the Naepo and Seosan areas, but the parish's present role is to carry that historical background into the ordinary liturgical and pastoral life of local Catholics. Dedicated to St. Andrew the Apostle, Unsan Catholic Church is an independent parish of the Seosan District and serves as a gathering place for Catholic life in a rural township setting.

History & origins

Unsan Parish began as a mission station under Seosan Parish, today's Seosan Dongmun-dong Parish, and was elevated to parish status in November 1974. The Korean Catholic directory gives November 20 as the foundation date, while the Encyclopedia of Korean Catholicism records November 30. Although the exact day differs, both sources agree on the central fact that the community was separated and elevated from Seosan Parish in November 1974.

The Encyclopedia of Korean Catholicism records St. Andrew the Apostle as the patron from the time of establishment. Elevation from mission station to parish meant that Catholics in Unsan-myeon and the surrounding area no longer depended solely on the mother parish in Seosan but formed an independent pastoral community in their own locality. Unsan subsequently became established as a parish of the Seosan District in the Diocese of Daejeon.

The continued listing of Unsan Parish and its patron in the current directory confirms that the elevation of 1974 marked the beginning of an enduring parish community rather than a temporary administrative change. Reliable sources do not provide enough detail to reconstruct the history of church construction or relocation, so those points have not been inferred. The verifiable historical core of Unsan Catholic Church is the growth of an older local mission-station community into an independent parish in the 1970s.
