About this place
Ungcheon Catholic Church is the parish church of Ungcheon Parish in the Boryeong district of the Diocese of Daejeon. It is listed in the Catholic Church directory in Korea as an independent parish and serves as a local pastoral center where Catholics in the southern Boryeong area, especially Ungcheon-eup and the Jusan area, gather for Mass and the sacraments, receive catechesis, and sustain parish community life. Rather than being a shrine associated with a particular historical event or a monastery centered on a religious community, its essential character is that of a parish church serving the ordinary life of local Catholics.
The Diocese of Daejeon's organization of the Ungcheon area as a separate parish pastoral unit reflects an effort to enable Catholics across a broad rural area to participate in parish life closer to where they live. Visitors can therefore understand Ungcheon Catholic Church as a living place of faith where the local Catholic community of southern Boryeong gathers for liturgy and fellowship.
History & origins
In January 2015, the Diocese of Daejeon formally announced the establishment of Ungcheon Parish together with a round of priestly appointments and the creation of four new parishes. According to the diocesan notice, the new parish was separated from Boryeong Dongdaedong Parish and was assigned all of Ungcheon-eup and the Jusan area as described in the announcement. At its beginning, the new parish community was recorded as comprising 151 households and 280 Catholics.
The Catholic Church directory in Korea records the establishment date of Ungcheon Parish as January 9, 2015, confirming the same period of foundation described by the diocesan announcement. Through this division, Catholics in the Ungcheon and Jusan areas became a parish community of their own rather than remaining within the broad territory of Boryeong Dongdaedong Parish, gaining a local center for continuing liturgical and pastoral life.
Ungcheon Parish has since continued to be listed as a parish in the Boryeong district of the Diocese of Daejeon. Unlike communities whose beginnings reach back to old martyr traditions or early Catholic villages, its history is characterized by a modern diocesan reorganization in which an existing parish was divided and a new pastoral unit was established in response to local pastoral conditions.
