About this place
Tanbang-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Daejeon Western District in the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon and is a large Catholic community serving the Tanbang-dong area. The official Catholic directory lists the Holy Family as its patron and confirms the participation of the Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing in parish ministry. It is a central parish space in which Mass and the sacraments are joined by catechesis, education, and the activities of many parish groups.
The present church is a complex parish facility with a main church, a smaller chapel, catechetical rooms, and multiple gathering spaces. This arrangement makes it possible to accommodate large liturgies as well as smaller prayer, education, and fellowship activities in one setting. Tanbang-dong is therefore best understood not simply as a large building, but as a pastoral space designed to support many different dimensions of parish life.
History & origins
Tanbang-dong Parish was established on August 12, 1992. After the parish community had taken root, securing a new church for the growing congregation became an important task, leading to a long period of construction and fundraising.
Construction of the new church began in October 1997. The project encountered significant difficulties when defects were discovered and structural changes became necessary, causing interruptions in the work. The parish continued the long building process and moved into the new church in July 2003, celebrating its first Mass there. Although design and construction had taken years, the new building then became the principal center of parish life.
The church was formally dedicated on October 10, 2004, in a liturgy presided over by Bishop Joseph Kyeong Gap-ryong. Two months earlier, participants in the Eighth Plenary Assembly of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences had visited Tanbang-dong Church for Sunday Mass and a renewal of marriage vows. This was an early sign that the new church would serve not only the local parish but also gatherings of the wider Church.
That broader role continued. On November 28, 2020, the Diocese of Daejeon celebrated at Tanbang-dong Church the opening Mass for the bicentennial jubilee of the birth of St. Andrew Kim Taegon, presided over by the diocesan bishop. From parish establishment through a prolonged church-building project and later diocesan and Asian Church events, the history of Tanbang-dong shows how a local parish church became a place capable of welcoming the wider Catholic community.
