About this place
Sodong Mission Station is a Catholic mission station of the Diocese of Daejeon in Eumbong-myeon, Asan, Chungcheongnam-do. It is currently listed as a mission station of the diocese in the Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea. As a small Catholic outpost away from a parish church, it has served as a place where local Catholics gather for prayer and continue their communal life of faith. Unlike a larger parish church, the very form of a mission station depends strongly on the participation and cooperation of local faithful, which helps explain the character of this place.
Sodong is particularly notable for a tradition of lay people helping preserve its physical and spiritual foundations. Diocesan records show that members of the community themselves provided for the first mission-station building and that later generations continued that spirit by caring for the surrounding grounds. More than a site defined by large facilities, it is therefore a place where visitors can recognize a local Catholic community sustained across generations through lay commitment and shared responsibility.
History & origins
The exact year in which Sodong Mission Station was founded could not be established from official sources in this research, but diocesan records make it possible to identify important features of its early development. A 2009 record of the Diocese of Daejeon states that Yun Seok-bok, Camillus, the first lay leader of the mission station, used his own resources to provide its first building. This shows that voluntary lay commitment played an important role in establishing and sustaining the local Catholic community.
That commitment continued in a later generation. Yun Won-hui, Francis, a great-grandson of Yun Seok-bok, donated land around the mission station, and a Way of the Cross was created there. On October 10, 2009, an appreciation Mass presided over by Bishop Augustine Kim Jong-soo and a community gathering commemorated the donation and the renewed vitality of the mission-station community.
Within the limits of the available evidence, the history of Sodong is therefore better understood not simply as a chronology of buildings but as a continuing pattern in which families and local Catholics, beginning with the first lay leader, preserved and enlarged a place for their life of faith. Further documentation is needed to establish the precise founding year and earlier details, but the diocesan record clearly supports the continuity of the community through sustained lay participation.
