About this place
Shinhapdeok Catholic Church is the church of Shinhapdeok Parish in the Dangjin district of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon. The Catholic Directory in Korea identifies Saint Andrew Kim Taegon, Korea's first priest and a martyr, as the parish patron and lists the parish as caring for several mission stations. It serves Catholics in the Hapdeok area as a center for Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and community life.
The parish is connected with the long Catholic tradition of the Naepo region, having grown as a community separated from Hapdeok Parish. The present church carries forward that history as a pastoral center linking parish and mission-station communities in the Dangjin area. The community's longstanding emphasis on the faith and martyrdom of its patron, Saint Andrew Kim Taegon, is an important part of understanding its identity.
History & origins
Shinhapdeok Parish was established on November 18, 1960, when it separated from Hapdeok Parish under the name “Beogeune Parish.” The creation of the new parish allowed the growing Catholic community of the Naepo area to receive pastoral care closer to where people lived. The establishment date recorded in the current Catholic Directory in Korea agrees with this date.
The parish name changed several times as the local setting developed. According to the Diocese of Daejeon's record for the parish's fiftieth anniversary, it was renamed “Unsan-ri Parish” in 1967 and began using the name “Shinhapdeok Parish” in January 1973. These changes are best understood not as the disappearance and re-creation of the community, but as successive names in the continuing life of the same parish.
In 2010, Bishop Lazarus You Heung-sik presided over a Mass of thanksgiving and Confirmation for the fiftieth anniversary of the parish. The community marked the anniversary by offering prayers, the Rosary, and a handwritten copy of Scripture prepared together over time, while 118 parishioners received the sacrament of Confirmation. The jubilee stands as a documented milestone showing how the parish founded in 1960 continued beyond half a century within the Catholic life of the region.
