About this place

Seonhwa-dong Catholic Church is a parish church in the Daejeon Central District of the Diocese of Daejeon and is dedicated to St. Andrew Kim Taegon. The parish has long formed a Catholic community in the old downtown area of Seonhwa-dong. After redevelopment significantly changed the neighborhood, the community moved into a newly built church and continues its parish life there today.

The parish's patronal identity is also connected with diocesan pilgrimage life. During the bicentenary of the birth of St. Andrew Kim Taegon, the Diocese of Daejeon included Seonhwa-dong among the designated churches for the plenary indulgence. The parish can therefore be understood both as an ordinary local parish serving the old downtown area and as a community that keeps alive the memory and faith of St. Andrew Kim, Korea's first priest and a martyr saint.

History & origins

Seonhwa-dong Parish was established on October 5, 1977. From that date, confirmed by the official Catholic directory, an independent parish community developed in the Seonhwa-dong area and continued Catholic life in Daejeon's old downtown under the patronage of St. Andrew Kim Taegon.

A significant commemorative moment connected with the parish's patron came during the bicentenary of St. Andrew Kim's birth. The Diocese of Daejeon included Seonhwa-dong among its designated churches for the plenary indulgence, allowing the parish to serve not only as a place of ordinary pastoral life but also as a destination for remembering the saint's life and martyrdom.

The largest recent physical change in the parish's history resulted from redevelopment in the Seonhwa-dong area. A diocesan bulletin announced that the existing church had to be relocated because of redevelopment and that, after completion of the new church, the first Mass in the new building would be celebrated on September 1, 2024. The present church near Uam-ro is the result of that relocation and rebuilding.

The history of Seonhwa-dong Parish thus runs from the establishment of the community in 1977, through the continuing identity centered on St. Andrew Kim, to the move into a new church in 2024 in response to urban redevelopment. It is a history not simply of preserving an old site, but of a parish community carrying its faith into a new space as the city around it changed.
