About this place

Seongyeon Catholic Church is the church of Seongyeon Parish in the Seosan District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea confirms that it is an independent parish separated from Seosan Dongmun-dong Parish. It serves as a local center of faith for Catholics in and around Seongyeon-myeon, providing a place for the Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life.

Parish sacramental life continues here, including Confirmation celebrated by the diocesan bishop. Although Seongyeon is a relatively recently formed parish, it has established its own church and community structure where local Catholics can pray and grow together. Visitors can understand Seongyeon Catholic Church as a parish born amid demographic change and the formation of new residential areas in Seosan, and as a living local community where ordinary pastoral and sacramental life continues today.

History & origins

Seongyeon Parish was established in November 2017 by separation from Seosan Dongmun-dong Parish. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records its date of establishment as November 24, 2017, and identifies Seosan Dongmun-dong as its mother parish. It thus began as a new local parish created from an existing community as the residential area around Seongyeon-myeon in Seosan grew.

After becoming an independent parish, the community moved toward securing a church of its own. According to the bulletin of the Diocese of Daejeon, construction of the church began in March 2021, and the first Mass in the new building was celebrated in April 2022. The parish thereby moved beyond its initial pastoral arrangements toward having a permanent space for its liturgical life.

On September 3, 2022, the new church was dedicated in a ceremony presided over by Bishop Augustinus Kim Jong-soo. During the building process, the parish community continued its prayer and communal efforts, and the dedication completed the physical and liturgical foundation of the newly established parish. The history of Seongyeon Catholic Church clearly illustrates how a parish was created in a growing district and then took root as its faithful built a church of their own.
