About this place
Seonggeosan Shrine is a martyr shrine of the Diocese of Daejeon that preserves the memory of Catholic villages formed deep in the mountain during periods of persecution and of the martyrs associated with them. It is listed as an official shrine by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea, and the diocesan guide explains that Catholics began taking refuge in the Seonggeosan area and forming communities there from the early nineteenth century.
The spiritual heart of the shrine lies in the memory of Catholic villages such as Sohakgol and Seodeulgol and in the rows of martyrs' graves. The mountain once provided refuge for missionaries and believers and served as a pastoral base, while a number of Catholics were arrested and martyred around the time of the Byeongin Persecution. The row graves connect that sacrifice to a specific landscape and make the memory of the martyrs tangible.
Today Seonggeosan continues as a place of veneration, retreat, and pilgrimage, with mountain paths linking it toward Baeti Shrine. Visitors encounter not simply a single church building but the remains of Catholic village sites, graves, paths, and memorial spaces, allowing the life and persecution of the nineteenth-century Catholic community to be understood through the landscape as a whole.
History & origins
From the early nineteenth century, Catholic villages were formed around Seonggeosan by believers seeking refuge from persecution. The Diocese of Daejeon's shrine guide explains that communities such as Sohakgol and Seodeulgol were established deep in the mountain, where Catholics could conceal their identity, and that French missionaries used the area as a place of rest and pastoral activity. Seonggeosan therefore became more than a refuge; it also served as a mountain pastoral base linking dispersed Catholic communities.
The community itself produced martyrs around the time of the Byeongin Persecution. According to diocesan material, seven Catholics from Seonggeosan were arrested in 1866 and martyred in Gongju and Cheongju, while others were martyred the following year in Seoul, Juksan, and elsewhere. The remains of those martyred at Gongju were buried in row graves on Seonggeosan, which became a central part of the shrine's martyr heritage.
In the modern period, the graves underwent disruption and relocation. A Catholic Peace newspaper account of the shrine's development reports that construction of a road to a military installation on the summit in 1959 led to the graves being moved and later neglected. Around 1995, restoration and development began in earnest on the basis of testimony from descendants of the martyrs. On July 22, 1998, the Diocese of Daejeon formally approved Seonggeosan as a shrine, establishing an official framework for veneration and pilgrimage.
Development continued thereafter. A diocesan bulletin records that the “Church Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Byeongin Persecution” was dedicated on October 30, 2021. The memory that began with hidden Catholic villages and row graves has thus continued through modern restoration and the building of a memorial church, allowing Seonggeosan to develop as a place where the life and martyrdom of persecuted Catholics are remembered in contemporary pilgrimage.
