About this place

Seocheon Seomyeon Catholic Church is a parish church in the Boryeong District of the Diocese of Daejeon, dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It serves the rural and fishing communities of Seomyeon in Seocheon-gun and lies within the same coastal area used by visitors traveling to places such as Chunjangdae Beach and Maryang-ri.

The Diocese of Daejeon explained that the parish was created to bring the Gospel more directly to underserved rural and fishing areas around Seocheon, Daecheon, and the western coast. At the same time, pastoral provision for vacationers and tourists who wished to attend Mass was part of the plan. The parish therefore has a dual character: it is the ordinary faith community of local residents and also a Catholic point of reference for people visiting the west coast, especially during vacation seasons.

History & origins

Seocheon Seomyeon Parish was established on January 12, 2011. A Lenten sharing notice issued by the Diocese of Daejeon the following year explained that the new parish had been created to extend the presence of the Gospel in relatively underserved rural and fishing communities around Seocheon, Daecheon, and the western coast. From its beginning, the parish therefore reflected the living conditions and pastoral needs of a coastal rural region.

Soon after its establishment, securing a church of its own became an important task. According to the 2012 diocesan notice, the community of about one hundred Catholics was building a small church on a spacious hillside site and asking the wider diocese for prayer and material support. The new church was intended not only to provide a stable place of worship for local Catholics but also to make Mass more accessible to visitors to coastal destinations such as Chunjangdae Beach and Maryang-ri Dongbaekjeong.

This pastoral direction continued. In 2022, the Diocese of Daejeon's guide to churches near vacation destinations specifically listed Seocheon Seomyeon Parish under Chunjangdae Beach, showing that it continued to function as a point of access to Mass for people visiting the coast.

The history of Seocheon Seomyeon Parish is therefore characterized less by an old architectural legacy than by the founding of a new community in 2011, the construction of its first church, and the gradual establishment of a pastoral mission embracing both rural residents and visitors to the coastal area. That background continues to shape the parish's regional identity.
