History & origins

Catholic life in the Seocheon area continued through a network of Catholic villages and mission stations before Seocheon Parish itself was established. A 2019 study published by the Chungcheongnam-do Institute of History and Culture records visits by French missionaries beginning in 1883 and describes how numerous mission communities—including Gochon, Gunan-i, Daetongmae, Dokmoe, Biin, Yonghwasil, and Jageunjae—developed as the area passed under the jurisdiction of parishes such as Hapdeok, Gongju, and Geumsari. This shows that Seocheon Parish was built upon an already accumulated local Catholic presence rather than appearing suddenly.

This development took an institutional turn in 1936. The official Catholic directory gives May 10, 1936, as the founding date of Seocheon Parish, while the academic study explains that the parish was established with the arrival of Father Jo In-won. It marked a transition from pastoral care centered on scattered mission stations toward a more stable parish-centered structure.

Although a complete post-foundation chronology has not been published in the sources consulted, Seocheon Parish has continued to help preserve and interpret the region's Catholic history. In 2019, together with the Chungcheongnam-do Institute of History and Culture, it held an academic conference at Sanmakgol Shrine and combined scholarly presentations with a pilgrimage route through the former Dokmoe mission site, the Jageunjae row graves, and Sanmakgol.

Seen in this way, the history of Seocheon Parish connects the survival and rebuilding of Catholic villages and mission stations after persecution, the establishment of a formal parish in 1936, and contemporary efforts to research and remember local Catholic heritage. It is one of the key institutions through which Seocheon's dispersed Catholic communities developed into an organized parish community.
