About this place

Sejong Dowon Catholic Church is the church of Sejong Dowon Parish in the Gongju District of the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon, with St. Peter as its patron. Centered on Yeonseo-myeon in Sejong Special Self-Governing City, it is a local parish where Catholics continue their life of faith through the Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community activities. Its newly dedicated church and education building provide independent spaces for liturgy and formation.

The new church has a liturgical space seating about 400 and a separate education building, providing a base not only for parish Masses but also for catechesis and community meetings. Sejong Dowon is also distinctive as a community rooted in the Yeonseo-myeon area rather than in the newer central districts of Sejong City. Visitors can understand it as a local parish of the Gongju District under the patronage of St. Peter, carrying on its life of faith and education around its new church.

History & origins

Sejong Dowon Parish was established on January 9, 2015, by separation from Jochiwon Parish. Both the Catholic Church Directory in Korea and the Diocese of Daejeon’s record of the new church dedication confirm the same date and the relationship with Jochiwon. The creation of an independent parish for Catholics in the northwestern part of Sejong and the Yeonseo-myeon area also reorganized the pastoral territory previously served by Jochiwon Parish.

After its establishment, the parish went through the process of securing a permanent church. According to diocesan records, the previous church was demolished, a groundbreaking ceremony was held on October 4, 2016, and construction of the new church began. The first Mass in the new building was celebrated on September 17, 2017. The newly established parish thus gained a more stable pastoral base centered on its own liturgical space.

After serving the community’s life of faith for years, the church was formally dedicated on May 2, 2026, in a ceremony presided over by Bishop Augustinus Kim Jong-soo. At the time of dedication, it was described as having a liturgical space of about 400 seats together with an education building. The sequence of establishment, construction, first entry Mass, and dedication shows how Sejong Dowon Parish took root as a new parish with an independent church amid the expansion of Sejong City’s residential areas.
