Saranggol Mission Station

History & origins

A Catholic village formed at Saranggol when believers sought refuge there during the period of persecution. Local historical research and reporting identify the village as the home area of the martyr Andrew Yu Chi-seong, his cousin Magdalena Yu, and the martyr Martha Yi, and emphasize that descendants of the martyrs continued the faith in the same locality.

The mission chapel was built in 1957. Local reporting states that the building has been treated as material related to Chungcheongnam-do's modern architectural heritage and presents it as a physical trace of a small rural community that continued prayer and mission-station worship over many years. Records also note that several priests and religious came from Saranggol, indicating the role of the mission station as a center of lived faith in the village.

Efforts were later made to preserve memories that might otherwise disappear. In 2015, a volume titled Descendants of Martyrs: Gongju Saranggol Mission Station compiled the village's origins and history, records of martyrs, family lines of descendants, and oral traditions. The Gongju Studies Archive at Kongju National University preserves this work as a record concerning Catholic history, mission, and martyrdom.

The history of Saranggol Mission Station therefore brings together a persecution-era Catholic village, the transmission of faith among martyrs' descendants, a mission chapel built in the mid-twentieth century, and modern efforts to research and record that inherited memory.
