About this place

Sanseong-dong Catholic Church is the parish church of the Diocese of Daejeon serving Sanseong-dong and the surrounding area of Jung-gu, Daejeon. The Catholic Directory of Korea identifies the 103 Korean Martyr Saints as the parish patrons. The church is the principal place where local Catholics in the residential area at the foot of Bomunsan Mountain celebrate Mass and the sacraments and continue their communal life of faith. Taking the Korean Martyr Saints as patrons makes the witness of those who preserved the faith under persecution a spiritual point of reference that the parish community remembers and seeks to follow.

A parish church is more than a building for the celebration of Mass; it is also a place where local Catholics hear the Word, pray, receive the sacraments, and continue the communal life of the Church. Sanseong-dong fulfills this role as a center of faith connecting Catholics in Sanseong-dong and nearby areas. Its identity under the patronage of the Korean Martyr Saints brings the ordinary life of the parish into relationship with the Korean Catholic tradition of martyrdom. For visitors, it is therefore a church where the present faith life of a local community and the memory of the martyrs can be understood together.

History & origins

Sanseong-dong Parish was established on August 12, 1992, after being separated from Daesa-dong and Yucheon-dong parishes. From its beginning it took the 103 Korean Martyr Saints as its patrons and began as an independent parish for Catholics in the southwestern part of Jung-gu, Daejeon. Securing a church building became an important task for the new parish, but the construction process continued far longer than had been expected.

The construction of the parish church remained unfinished for many years. A parish record published by the Diocese of Daejeon in 2007 explains that more than thirteen years of construction had led to fatigue and conflict within the community. In 2004 the pastoral focus shifted from the building project itself to strengthening the community’s life of faith. A small-community movement was actively pursued, aiming at family communities centered on prayer, small communities centered on the Word, and a parish community centered on the liturgy. It was an attempt to turn the prolonged construction problem into an occasion for renewing the community’s faith life.

This change also became connected with the resumption of construction. As participation in the community recovered, work proceeded to finish the incomplete church. On Holy Thursday in 2006, the first Mass was celebrated in the newly completed worship space. On December 3 of the same year, the church was dedicated, bringing the long construction process to a major conclusion. In the parish record, the completion of the building carries particular meaning because it is presented not merely as the end of a construction project but as a result of the community gathering its strength again.

The history of Sanseong-dong Parish is therefore not only a story of parish establishment and construction. It is also marked by the decision to pursue the inner renewal of the community while the building project was stalled, and by the way that renewed communal life helped bring the church to completion. The church today embodies this experience of rebuilding the community and shows how the growth of the physical parish space and the growth of the community were closely intertwined.
