Sanghong-ri Mission Station

About this place

Sanghong-ri Mission Station in Eumam-myeon, Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, is a Catholic mission station of the Diocese of Daejeon and also the nationally registered cultural heritage property “Sanghong-ri Mission Station of Seosan Dongmun-dong Catholic Church.” According to the national heritage record, three structures are registered together: the mission-station chapel, the former rectory, and the bell tower. The place continues today as a mission-station community connected with parish life in the Seosan area. The survival of a liturgical building, traces of a rectory, and a bell tower on one site shows that this place once served as more than a small chapel and held a central role in local Church life.

Its value lies in the meeting of traditional Korean wooden architecture with the spatial needs of Western Catholic liturgy. The site also preserves memories of a period when this area served as a center of parish life in Seosan and of the time when the remains of Haemi martyrs were kept here. The construction date, however, is given differently in the national heritage record and in Catholic historical research, so no specific year is asserted in this introduction. Sanghong-ri is best understood both as a living place of faith and as a cultural heritage site preserving modern Catholic architecture and Church history in the Seosan region.
