Sambong Mission Station

History & origins

The Sambong Catholic community began to take a concrete form around February 1977, when fifteen believers started gathering in a rented room of a farmhouse. Despite limited means, the Catholics raised funds for a building and obtained land for a mission station, while the size of the community gradually increased. A distinctive feature of this early period is that the believers first formed the community and then worked together to secure the space they needed when no separate worship place yet existed.

A turning point came in 1979. When the needs of Sambong became known to Huam-dong Parish in the Archdiocese of Seoul, which was seeking to practice communal sharing, support for constructing the mission station was pledged in January of that year. Priests and parishioners of Dangjin Parish also contributed. Groundbreaking took place in April, and on December 1 Bishop Hwang Min-seong of Daejeon presided over the blessing of the mission station. The completed building was a rectangular hall-style structure of about 132 square meters. The process became an example of local self-help reinforced by support from another parish community.

After construction, the mission station continued to develop a tradition of communal prayer. In particular, beginning in 1995, believers gathered during Lent to meditate on the Lord’s Passion by praying the fourteen Stations of the Cross. Their persistence in continuing this Lenten prayer regardless of the number of participants shows that the community placed shared prayer, rather than the building alone, at the center of its life. If inter-parish cooperation created the physical space, repeated communal prayer afterward helped sustain it as a place of faith.

The history of Sambong Mission Station thus brings together the self-help efforts of a small rural community, assistance from another parish, and a prayer life continued across generations. The solidarity among Catholic communities that made construction possible in 1979 and the Lenten devotion sustained afterward remain two important elements in explaining how the mission station took root.
